In another way, its to give the citizens the significant amount of pleasure possible, the civilization has betrayed art. For example,¨You’ve got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art.¨ (Huxley 220) In this quote, it states that Mond acknowledges John´s protest a well-known Shakespeareś books a preferred result from this society’s emotional process. The significance of “community” and “identity” in this motto is “community” refers to it being as people involved in or part of the community, and “identity” in other words are shown as their predestined castes and have their own individual sets.įirst, people sacrificed their own self to pick between something they loved and do not love but that’s not the point they viewed them as different as in a product of the World State. Whereas, social stability calls for residents to seek the joyful of happiness by keeping active and having good-self awareness, except to do so you have to face a plethora of struggles. Social Stability is not at all the benefit of price and nor to maintain it because they all stick to themselves and are all about pleasure. Truth is maintained as a state fiction and happiness is derived from physical pleasure.In the novel, Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley the World State persuasive social stability along managing their citizens. Any and all personal fulfillment is sacrificed to temporary desires which are fulfilled with meaningless sex and deadening drugs. These ideas are considered savage and dangerous. John as an outsider threatens this stability by presenting ideas such as love, passion, and community, ideas he learned from reading Shakespeare. The human body has been altered to make the state function more smoothly. The rulers of the World State genetically engineer people to fit specific roles in the social order. Even Bernard and Helmholtz as members of the highest caste in the World State express dissatisfaction with their personal place in the world. Ultimately the stability is the only goal. Throughout the novel there is a tension between individual desires and needs and the stability of the World State. The vision of this novel is a condemnation of contemporary consumer society. ![]() Notice that in the World State it is a legitimate option to blot out one’s life with a drug. Huxley saw the growth of consumer society as one that erodes real human life by replacing it with superficial and fleeting pleasures. The novel presents a world in which individual immediate pleasures are satisfied to the exclusion of all meaningful forms of life. The danger is that any semblance to real human life has been erased in the service of stability and control. The World State maintains it complete control by maintaining a populace that is controlled through superficial pleasure and internal conditioning designed to render them compliant in a system that determines their place before they are even born. Whereas 1984 operates via complete surveillance and control of information, Brave New World operated through technological changes and manipulation of the human biology. ![]() Much like 1984, Brave New World takes place under the complete control of totalitarian state.
